How to Choose the Right Rack for your Board
Share
Not every board is built the same, and the same goes for the racks that store them. Whether you ride a shortboard, longboard or SUP, the right rack keeps your gear safe, easy to access, and looking good. The wrong fit can cause pressure dents, awkward angles, or wasted space the right one makes storage feel effortless.
Shortboards
Lightweight and compact, shortboards are generally the easiest to store, but they still need proper support. A cushioned cradle that holds the board securely without squeezing it is ideal. Wall mounted horizontal racks or multi board racks work perfectly if you like quick, grab & go access. Because shortboards don’t take up much room, you can store them almost anywhere a home office, hallway, or garage.
Longboards
Longboards are heavier, wider, and more prone to dents, so they need stronger, wider support. Look for racks with sturdy steel arms, generous padding, and enough depth so the board isn’t forced into a tight angle. Heavy-duty wall racks and floor standing racks make storage easier, while ceiling racks help if you’re short on space.
SUPs
SUPs are the true heavyweights: long, wide, and surprisingly heavy. They need a rack with serious strength, wide spacing, and thick cushioning to keep everything stable. SUP racks should feel completely solid - flex, no wobble. Ceiling racks work well in tight garages, and wall racks are great if you have the space to spread out.
Choosing Your Rack
It really comes down to three things:
Your board: shortboards need snug support, longboards need width, and SUPs need maximum strength
How often you use it: daily surfers often prefer wall racks; seasonal SUP riders usually like ceiling storage.
Your space: cramped garages benefit from vertical or overhead setups, while bigger sheds can mix and match styles.
The right rack protects your boards, keeps your space organised, and makes getting out on the water easier.
